Dr. Bates is currently the President of ALTECA Ltd. and a pioneer in the field of Forensic Food Microscopy. He received a B.S. in Chemistry from Heidelberg College, a M.S. in Biochemistry from Purdue University and a Ph.D. in Grain Science from Kansas State University where he was an assistant professor in the Department of Grain Science from 1972 to 1981. Dr. Bates became an independent consultant and founded LSB Products, where he developed several agriculture test kits and products for the integrated pest management industry. He incorporated the business as ALTECA Ltd. in 1986 and has been solving problems in the food and feed industries ever since.
Dan is a microscopist and materials analyst with ALTECA Ltd, where he specializes in small particle characterization and forensic food analysis. He received Bachelor of Science degrees in Anthropology and Biochemistry from Kansas State University. Dan was awarded the STAR Trainee Award from the Kansas IdeA Network for Biomedical Research Excellence (K-INBRE) for his master’s research in eye lens protein interactions. He is currently pursuing his doctoral degree in Food Science with an emphasis in food security and traceability.
Kathleen began her career at ALTECA as an intern, while earning her Bachelor of Science degree in Feed Science & Management at Kansas State University. She has completed short courses in Feed Microscopy and Forensic Food Microscopy. Kathleen is currently specializing in identifying foreign objects from bakery products and in feed microscopy.
