Feed Microscopy Short Course

NOTE: We are currently restructuring our courses and upgrading our teaching area/equipment. No courses will be scheduled until late 2010.

Our Feed Microscopy short course covers all aspects of feed microscopy from basic stereomicroscopy techniques to advanced compound microscopy. A laboratory/reference workbook, a working reference sample collection of over 100 feed ingredients and a kit of hand tools will be provided to each participant.

Our Feed Microscopy Short Course includes:

  • an introduction to the quality control aspects of feed microscopy;
  • structural characteristics of commodities, ingredients and their common adulterants and contaminants;
  • cereal, legume, and oilseed by-products;
  • animal and marine by-products;
  • sample processing and handling;
  • mineral, vitamin and feed additive identifications;
  • advanced compound microscopic techniques for confirming identity;
  • problem solving techniques for feed quality; and
  • methods for the evaluation of pelleted and extruded feeds and the new co-extruded or co-mingled ingredients.

This is a complete course with extra emphasis on the identification of rendered by-products. Students will be at an advanced-intermediate level upon completion.

This course is particularly valuable for anyone concerned with feed quality and meeting FDA specifications for BSE-free products.

Feed microscopy is the subjective half of the quality assurance picture. It is the fastest and most practical way to identify contaminants and adulterants in ingredients and finished feeds. No scientific instrument can take the place of a well trained microscopist. This “hands on” short course will provide a wealth of practical information and techniques to upgrade and enhance any quality assurance program and quality control lab.

Microscopes and all needed equipment will be provided.
